My Story

Nature in vitro was started in early 2023 by Anna (aka Dr. Mullen). Creating terrariums became a natural progression of her love for plants (which really started as a lockdown hobby).

To her, it brings together her scientific and creative sides; combining the understanding of what plants need and harnessing that to create closed ecosystems, with mindfulness and an imaginative approach to produce unique landscapes for others to enjoy.

Here’s a more personal explanation of how Nature in vitro came to be:

In 2020, as the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic set in, I completed my PhD thesis. Obviously, this was a weird time for everyone, but it came at a particularly strange point for me as I was transitioning my time as a PhD student in academia, to trying to figure out where I wanted to go next. Remember, there were hiring freezes, we were allowed out once per day for exercise, and no-one knew how long it would last.

A couple of months of isolation, anxiety and boredom later, I found a job! The NHS needed people with laboratory experience to help with the building pressure of Covid testing. So, during the height of the pandemic, and through several lockdowns, that’s what I did.

As vaccinations were rolled out, the world opened up again, and infection rates finally dropped, I found myself again looking to move on. I found a job in scientific publishing. However, a desk-based role (and a remote one at that) just didn’t suit me. So, I left.

Then, after another couple of months of anxiety and fruitless job-searching (and not really knowing what I wanted to do), and with the encouragement of many friends, I decided to see whether I could transform a hobby into a business. And so, Nature in vitro was born!

As scary as it is to really invest my time, energy and money into something that might not even lift off the ground, I have realised how much I love creating little slices of nature for other people to take home and enjoy. And if not now, when else would I get the opportunity to try? This has already drawn on so many of the things I’ve learned during my time in different (often very stressful!) environments, and I’m really excited to see where it might take me!

Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy my work as much I enjoy creating it,

Anna
